Almost every portable cooler or "personal AC" listing puts a square-footage number front and center: "covers up to 215 sq ft," "cools rooms up to 350 sq ft," and so on. It reads like a spec. Having reviewed several of these devices, we've found the number is treated more like a marketing lever than a measurement, and in a lot of listings, it isn't there at all.
How coverage area is supposed to be measured
For a real evaporative cooler, coverage area is a function of airflow (measured in cubic feet per minute) at a given fan speed, combined with how much the air temperature actually drops as it passes through the wet pad. A legitimate figure comes from testing the unit at a specific speed, in a specific humidity range, and stating those conditions alongside the square footage. Almost none of the consumer listings we've checked disclose the conditions the number was tested under, which makes the figure impossible to verify or compare between products.
What we actually found across the coolers we've reviewed
The pattern splits into two groups, and neither is fully satisfying. AiraBreeze discloses a specific figure, up to 215 sq ft, but we couldn't independently verify it against any testing methodology. CoolCove AC discloses real wattage and other specs but no coverage area or tank runtime at all. CoolJet AC discloses neither wattage nor coverage area, alongside an unverifiable "HVAC technician" endorsement. Froza AC goes further and doesn't disclose a cooling mechanism at all, just a dramatic "35°C to 17°C" headline claim that its own footer disclaimer contradicts. A disclosed number you can't check and no number at all end up being closer to each other than either is to a real, testable spec.
Why this happens
A square-footage claim is cheap to print and expensive to make honest. Real testing means a controlled room, a humidity-controlled environment, and repeatable methodology, work that a listing photo and a bold number substitute for at a fraction of the cost. Evaporative cooling is also unusually sensitive to conditions the manufacturer can't control (your room's humidity, ventilation, ceiling height), so even an honestly-tested number from a lab in one climate may not transfer to your actual room.
What to check before trusting a coverage number
- Treat any disclosed square footage as a best-case number from an unstated test condition, not a guarantee for your specific room
- If no coverage figure is disclosed at all, that's not automatically worse than a made-up one, but it does mean you're buying on faith for that spec
- Check whether wattage, tank capacity and runtime are disclosed alongside the coverage claim. A listing that discloses none of these together is disclosing less than it appears to
- Match the technology to your climate before the square footage matters at all: evaporative cooling underperforms badly above roughly 60% relative humidity regardless of the coverage number printed on the box
A coverage-area number is one of the easiest specs for a listing to get away with either inflating or omitting, because almost nobody checks it against a real test. Reading it as a marketing anchor rather than a guarantee, and checking what else is (or isn't) disclosed alongside it, tells you more about a specific cooler than the number itself does.
